So what’s in a name?… Apparently a lot if you’re Microsoft.

Microsoft has the tendency to change the names of products on a regular basis, and in most cases, not because of any major change in the product (although major advancements have been made), but likely an edict from some marketing guru or to reflect their current market strategy.

Let’s take a quick look at the history of some of their major products and their names over the years.

Axapta, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Dynamics 365 for Operations, Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Dynamics 365 Finance, Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

Navision, Dynamics NAV, Madeira, Tenerife, Dynamics 365 Business Central

Microsoft CRM, Microsoft Dynamics, Dynamics CRM,  Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement (Dynamics 365 for Sales, Dynamics 365 for Customer Service, Dynamics 365 for Marketing, Dynamics 365 for Field Service, Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation).

As you can see, the names have changed many times over the years.

Who else changes names that often? It’s not like I’ve changed the name of my son every year since he was born. Or maybe I have?

The Baby, Zach the Zygote, Trent N. Munson (born), Kiddo, Trent N. Munson (when he’s in trouble), PIA (teen years), The Money Pit (college), Trent…my wonderful and gifted son who is now a productive member of society.

Maybe I have changed his name over the years… and maybe I shouldn’t criticize Microsoft so much for changing theirs.

Thanks,

Mark
