Although Great Plains as a company was founded over 30 years ago, their first release of Dynamics 1.0 which became the ERP of choice across North America was not released until February 1993. Great Plains Software was later purchased by Microsoft for $1.1 Billion in 2001.  Dynamics GP roadmap.

Following the purchase of Great Plains, Microsoft used the "Dynamics" branding for all of its business applications. (NAV, SL and AX were also acquisitions following GP).
