AKA Develops a Custom Mobile Solution for Nonprofit Organization Using the Microsoft Power Platform

At AKA, we’re proud to work with some amazing nonprofit organizations. One such example is LifeWorks, a nonprofit that works tirelessly to advocate for youth and families in need. Empowering these individuals on the path to self-sufficiency, LifeWorks helps families and young people struggling with homelessness, abuse, and other major challenges.

AKA helped LifeWorks, one of our nonprofit partners, implement our Social Services Case Management for Nonprofit Organizations system. This enabled LifeWorks to better manage their enormous amounts of data in an efficient and user-friendly manner. Thanks to the data processing improvements that followed, LifeWorks is now able to provide its field staff with the support they need to track client progress over time.

Despite the success of this new system, however, there was another lingering issue that needed our attention. At the time, LifeWorks didn’t have an organization-wide, uniform procedure in place for uploading sensitive client information into Dynamics 365. Each staff member was using a different solution, and while the method itself was HIPAA compliant, some staff members were using non-HIPAA compliant mobile apps.

Better Client Service with the Help of the Microsoft Power Platform

After reviewing the situation, the nonprofit experts at AKA came up with an efficient, affordable solution: a custom mobile app for uploading client data built with the Microsoft Power Platform. Using the Power Platform, we were able to build a HIPAA compliant solution that empowered LifeWorks staff to securely upload client info via mobile—from anywhere, at any time. LifeWorks could now feel confident that each staff member was using an approved procedure for uploading client data.

How the Microsoft Power Platform Works to Empower Nonprofits

How does the Power Platform provide nonprofits with affordable solutions? The Power Platform is actually comprised of three separate tools: Power Automate (previously known as Microsoft Flow), Power BI, and Power Apps. Microsoft’s aim when developing the Power Platform was to give organizations the ability to quickly and easily manage data and build custom apps. Each component of the Power Platform can accomplish a lot on its own, but when combined, they’re capable of providing organizations with custom solutions at a fraction of the cost of standard software customization.

The Microsoft Power Platform is built on the Common Data Services for Apps (CDS), a secure Azure Cloud database. It goes without saying that Power Platform-based apps can be integrated with other Microsoft applications, such as Dynamics 365 ERP. But thanks to the CDS data schema, solutions built with the Power Platform can also work with third party applications.

The result? Organizations like LifeWorks get access to powerful, affordable solutions that can be built in a fraction of the time typical of more traditional custom solutions. What’s more, there’s no need to switch to a new ERP software solution or other software platform. Apps built with the Power Platform can be built around existing systems, reducing costs and saving time.
