Is Your “Cloud ERP” Really Cloud Based?

Though most businesses are familiar with the term “Cloud Computing”, it can mean different things to different people. Chances are if you ask 10 individuals what it means to have an application in the cloud, you will get 4 or 5 different answers (or maybe even 10!) Part of the reason for this is that today’s hosting environments allow for different level of services that offer some of the value of the cloud, but are not true cloud solutions. When it comes to Cloud Financial Accounting It is important to understand those differences.

Many companies assume that if they do not physically store software on their servers, they are running a cloud solution. That is not the case, though. If licenses such as Dynamics GP are purchased and placed on a 3rd party server, then upgrades, patches, back-ups and other maintenance will still have to be performed - and at a cost. Performance can become an issue as well, as you could run out of disk space or processing speed with this model. There is also the issue of who is ultimately responsible for keeping the solutions up and running.

A true cloud solution utilizes the Software as a Service (SaaS) model in which the software applications are not only hosted by a third party, but also maintained and upgraded automatically.  This allows for no upfront software costs, fast implementation, and no new hardware to purchase or maintain. It also means that if additional disk space or RAM is needed, it can be provided for very quickly.
