Security Options in Dynamics NAV 2009 R2

The latest update to Microsoft Dynamics NAV adds a host of new security features which can be a little confusing if you're not familiar with the technical side of things. I'll try to keep things as simple as possible, but even if you don't fully follow all the different ways Dynamics NAV can protect your data, you should at least realize that Microsoft has gone to great length to keep your data in the right hands.

The focus of security in Dynamics NAV is in transmission, when data travels from the RoleTailored client and the Dynamics NAV Server. The default security is “encrypt and sign,” which encrypts all the data before sending and decrypts at the other end. Clients that are in the server's domain (or in a trusted domain) use Kerberos connections to talk to the server. Computers outside the network use a Single Socket Layer (SSL) connection to lock the communication down tight before exchanging information.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Microsoft product if you couldn't configure all of these measures to your heart's content. The encrypt and sign protection is scalable, controlled by the “ProtectionLevel” parameter that can be set on both the server and the client. You can also set backup behaviors for security. For instance, say a computer on the trusted network tries to establish a Kerberos connection but can't for some reason. You can have the system then switch to another system like NTML authentication to establish encryption and keep work moving.

Whether you're operating a company of 200 or 2,000, your data is important and needs to be secured. Even though setting up and configuring Dynamics NAV security may not be your job, it's good to know that there are options for those whose it is.
